You should join the SDA because the SDA can give help and guidance. It’s like insurance for your job. Peace of mind with the SDA.

For us members the organisers are there to help us if we have problems to work through it with the management, then I know exactly what my rights are and that they are being protected

What does it cost to be a member?

To ensure you have the services you deserve, all members contribute union fees.  SDA fees are calculated on the time you work – the less you work, the less you pay.  SDA fees are fully tax deductible because your union is a not-for-profit organisation.

Membership Fees as at 1 January 2024
Less than 10 hours a week $ 4.50
10 hours or more but less than 20 hours per week $ 8.05
20 hours or more a week $ 11.30

Get Access to the exclusive online members’ area

When it comes to your rights at work, just remember members.sda.com.au. This new website is designed to bring you all the information you need, such as pay rates and a list of your entitlements.  All at the click of a button.

Industry wide advocacy and campaigns

The SDA is front and centre when it comes to your rights at work.  Whether there are problems at the local shopping centre or changes to legislation which will affect you, the SDA is on deck.

Shop floor representation

If you belong to the SDA, you’re never alone at work.  You have exclusive access to your:

  • SDA workplace Delegate who works right alongside you. SDA Delegates are ordinary workers just like you who are prepared to go that extra mile to help their fellow workers.
  • Skilled SDA Union Reps who visit stores regularly and also offer great advice. They can often fix small problems or misunderstandings before they grow into major disputes.
  • Experienced industrial advocates and industrial lawyers who are on hand to deal with more serious problems.

Always contact the SDA early if you have a problem.

Scholarships and competitions

The SDA puts a bit of fun back into life with its fantastic competitions.  Keep an eye on your email inbox and our twice a year member journal for our latest competitions.

Every year, the SDA gives away a thousand $120 Education Scholarships to its members and their children.  All members of the SDA who are students at any level of study may apply and also parents who are members of the SDA may nominate a dependent child who is a student at any level of study.

If you’re under 18, you should know

It’s a sad fact: young people are more vulnerable at work and are almost twice as likely to be injured at work as adults.

The SDA protects young workers - we make sure you get paid correctly and get regular pay rises.

What if I change my mind?

If you join the SDA then change your mind or later decide you don’t want to be a member, you can resign by sending us a signed letter of resignation (or email containing a hand written signature). We will then instruct your employer to stop deducting Union fees and your membership with the SDA will cease.

A member can leave the SDA at any time - there are no withdrawal fees.

If you, or your parents, have any queries please call us on 1300 ASKSDA (1300 275 732) and we’ll answer all your questions. We’re happy to hear from you.
