Proposed Changes to Retail Opening Hours

Go Back
  • 13th October 2015

Retail workers have faced major disruptions to their home lives over the last few years, with extensions of weeknight trading to 9pm in 2010, and the introduction of Sunday trading in 2012.  Now, having been led to believe that there were no further changes to be made prior to the 2017 election, we find the Liberals hatching a scheme to introduce 7am starts Monday to Saturday, and an additional hour on Saturday evening.

We are dismayed by this proposal.  The SDA has explained to the Government in submissions and discussions the difficulties associated with this early start.  Difficulties with public transport, on which so many of our members rely.  Difficulties with accessing early morning childcare, and with dropping children at school.

This change is unwarranted and unwelcome and we will be opposing it with determination and vigour.
